Description of the organisation : EFS is the French national blood service covering all the aspects of collection/testing/manipulations/distribution of blood products in France. Moreover, EFS is the French leader in tissue/cell banking and cell production for clinical uses (e.g. cornea, cord blood, hematopoietic cell expansion, and MSC production). The research and R&D in cell engineering are done in close collaboration with universities and national research structures: INSERM and CNRS. With clinicians and national societies, as French society for bone marrow transplantation (SFGM-TC), EFS develops GMP grade process allowing the implementation of clinical trials (e.g. national trial for prevention of GVHD by injection of MSC). EFS has research teams involved in biology of native MSC, in interaction between MSC and immune system, and in comprehension of MSC differentiation.

Description of the organisation : The Service de Recherches en Hémato-Immunologie (SRHI) is located at the Hospital Saint-Louis in Paris (France) and belongs to the Commissariat ŕ l'Energie Atomique (CEA). The SRHI is part of the Institut Universitaire d'Hématologie (IUH) which is a leading institute in the study of histocompatibility antigens. The CEA entrusted SRHI with a health mission and the aim to study solid and liquid graft tolerance and tumor dissemination. Since the discovery of the HLA-G molecule in 1992, the SRHI has become the leader on this topic, federated numerous laboratories internationally, and organized 4 international congresses and workshops.

Description of the organisation : The Cell Factory is a Hospital-based GMP facility dedicated to the research, development and clinical application of advanced cell-based medicinal products for regenerative medicine. It is part of the Unit of Transfusion Medicine, Cellular Therapy and Cryobiology, Department of Regenerative Medicine, Fondazione Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan. The Department includes also: 1) a blood bank, with an AABB accredited immunohematology laboratory; 2) the coordination Centre for organ transplantation (Nord Italia Transplant), with its EFI (European Federation of Immunogenetics) accreditated laboratory; 3) the Milano Cord Blood Bank, one of the largest cord blood banks in Europe, with more than 6500 cord blood units for transplantation; 4) the Italian Biobank, dedicated to the collection and storage of different biomaterials. The Cell Factory includes 78 square meters of GMP laboratories, with devices, technologies and trained personnel for clinical-grade manipulation of cell products from different origins. Its R&D section includes fully equipped laboratories for cell biology, molecular biology, immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry. The facility received approval from the Italian National Agency for Medicinal Products, for cell therapy production in July 2007.

Description of the organisation : The Autónoma University in Madrid is a public University with five main University Hospitals affiliated to its Medical School (Facultad de Medicina), including 2 large centres (LPZ, HPH), 2 intermediate centres (LPR, FJD), and a monographic, national Children Hospital (HNJ). These Hospitals provide health care for over 1.5 million inhabitants in the Madrid area, gathering up to 2.500 Hospital beds. University Children's Hospital, Department of General Pediatrics, Hematology and Oncology, Tübingen, Germany.

Description of the organisation : The Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen is one of the scientifically most active in Germany. The focus is on stem cell transplantation and neurology. The University Children's Hospital is divided into five departments, including the Department of General Pediatrics, Hematology and Oncology. Several MSC-based projects in our department are already funded by the German research ministry. The paediatric stem cell transplantation program in our clinic has been the most active in Germany during the last two years with more than 50 paediatric transplantations per year. Patients come here from all over Europe, particularly for haploidentical stem cell trans-plantation. Our clinic was built in 2000 and houses well equipped laboratories, an animal facility and a GMP facility for stem cell processing and cell culture.

More than 500 doctoral theses have been completed since 1984. In addition, it serves the function of a hotbed to qualify young academics for leading positions in universities and research centers.
